This summer, I participated as a team leader in Student consultancy projects organised by UK University Services.
As a graduate of class 2020, I proactively researched internship opportunities to help me navigate in the current challenging job market. The UK University Services student consultancy project was a unique opportunity to raise my commercial awareness, to work on real life projects and to see my work implemented.
Firstly, I became a member of a team of 6 participants and UK University Services matched our team with Female Techpreneur, a company founded for female-led tech businesses. After an initial voting, I became a team leader for this two-week internship.
The selection of interns united both undergraduate and postgraduate students specialised in MORSE (Mathematics & Operational Research & Statistics & Economics), marketing, international business, information technology management for business and French and German.
We have been greatly supported and encouraged by UK University Services as well as by Female Techpreneur. After an initial meeting with the Female Techpreneur’s founder, (Bukola M. Babajide), we started to create a social media marketing strategy. The tasks varied from a detailed analysis of the company’s social media channels, newsletter, YouTube channel and podcast, to SWOT analysis, suggestion of mentorship and sponsorship packages to social media campaigns.
According Bukola, we have achieved more than was expected. The success originates from everyday team meetings, brainstorming and four presentations of our work to Bukola. We have effectively combined our strengths and weaknesses to deliver this result.
The student project was undertaken remotely but with lots of virtual team interaction through regular online meetings!
The work on a real-life project was highly encouraging because we have posted our improved version of posts on social media and were able to measure the immediate impact of our work. From the results of our interns’ survey, it is clear that participants developed presentation skills, report writing and analytic skills.
Moreover, interns had the opportunity to improve their commercial awareness, project management and to get insight into the business and marketing functioning of social media. Undoubtedly, these are skills to be all the more sought-after in the digitalised world we now live in.
Furthermore, effective teamwork with previously unknown students and direct cooperation with the founder of Female Techpreneur demonstrate our resilience and adaptability. On behalf of our team, I would like to thank to UK University Services for enabling us to join this invaluable internship experience and to Bukola who created a welcoming, relaxed yet professional atmosphere in which our work was valued and our team could thrive.
